A Good Tent but Room for Improvement
4 Stars
A Good Tent but Room for Improvement
I purchased the AmazonBasics 4-Person Dome tent for my use on a camping trip I just returned from. The location was the lower Florida Keys during Presidents Day weekend from February 16th to February 19th at a combination RV and tent campground. I have given the tent a rating of 4 out of 5 stars. As a background about myself, I went camping a lot in the Boy Scouts of America and also went backpacking. This review is written from the viewpoint of someone who enjoys smaller tents and doesn’t care much for traditional car camping with a lot of gear. I was also on a budget so obtaining a backpacking tent wasn’t an option for me at the time.Overall I had an overall enjoyable experience with this tent. It kept me dry from the dew that formed in the morning and it kept out the larger insects. The price was right and I wanted to try out this product. I did not use the electrical cord pass-through but that would not have changed the experience other than the possibility of being able to charge my phone.Pros:•Great size: I feel like this tent packs up very small for how much space is available in the tent itself. I wasn’t able to test it out, but it could most likely fit a smaller air bed without issue•Materials: The quality of the materials that went into the making of this tent feel great. I wasn’t able to fully test out the waterproofness since it did not rain during my stay but I don’t feel like it would of made much of a difference.•Rugged Floor: I still used a ground cloth underneath the tent to protect the flooring and to ensure a dry place to sleep but the material appears to be waterproof and more rugged compared to the rest of the fabric.•Price: I can’t place enough emphasis on this, at the current price of $54.99 it’s a fantastic deal.•Pack-ability: The cloth bag that one uses with this tent is perfectly sized if you fold the tent into thirds length-wise. No stuffing into a bag either, this comes with a zippered bag that’s a breeze to put it away.Neutral:•No Bathtub Floor: This is not a deal breaker nor does it take away from my star rating. I’ve used tents that have both a “bathtub floor” and tents that use a traditional one. However, if you use a ground cloth and avoid setting up in natural low spots there isn’t any issue with water leakage in my opinion.•Average number of pockets: Glad there were pockets to use to store my headlamp and external battery pack for my phone. Most tents should have these anyways but the locations of the pockets on opposite sides of the tent seemed like an interesting choice. It also had a “gear hammock” for storing stuff on the ceiling of the tent.•Lantern hook: It’s nice that you have an electric lantern hook but I didn’t use it. If you do decide to use this hook though you are not able to use the “gear hammock” at the same time. It’s a tradeoff but I’ll take the extra gear space anytime.Cons:•Poor ventilation: I know that amazon says the ventilation is good but it isn’t enough at lower latitudes. With just two people in the tent I found it to become very hot and humid even late at night. This is the winter season in Florida and as a 3-season tent it shouldn’t have that issue. It needs at least another window on the back side and extra guy lines to hold the rainfly open over the sides of the tent so that wind blows through. If I hold onto the tent I will be stitching in extra guy lines. The window also does not fully open either. It only zips down partially so that you can tuck the extra fabric into a pocket that it creates. I would prefer to have even more ventilation.•Ventilation netting size: In more northern climates this shouldn’t be an issue since mosquitos are the primary biting insects. No-see-ums (also known as sand flies) though can and will fly through the netting to bite you. I was bitten a lot by the little devils and the only way I could keep them away was with a healthy helping of DEET laden bug spray. It really needs a much smaller netting so that these insects can stay outside and away from the occupants.Overall, I did like the tent and I think a few changes could make it even better. If the cons were rectified in a future update I would have no qualms about purchasing the new model even if it was priced higher. These negatives are big problems for me that kept it from being a five star.If you are a potential buying in a more northern area or you camp in such areas I think you’ll enjoy this tent. Especially during the spring and fall months. I will encourage your purchase of this tent. For you I would give it a 4 to 5 star ratingIf you are buying this tent for use in more southern areas you might have some issues. If the area where you are staying does not get cool during the night, it will get warm and humid. If there are issues with no-see-ums where the tent will be placed they will get in and they will bite. For you, I recommend seeing if there are some other options before purchasing this tent. It is by no means a bad tent, but these cons will affect your enjoyment for sure. For you I would give it a 3 to 4 star rating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little tent! Easy up and down and rain-proof!
Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2017
Great little tent. I fit one adult sleeping bag and three kids sleeping bags in it just fine. I put it up in my living room for practice and then took it for our camping trip. It went up quickly and easily with one person. The weather we stayed in was pretty mild, and opening the window in the door helped with stuffiness inside. The little flap for an extension cord worked just fine. One night was very windy and rainy and we all stayed nice and dry! No rain in the tent even though we didn't use a tarp under it. Another window would have been nice, but one time I just unhooked one side of the rainfly and folded it over for more airflow and that worked fine for a short time. The zippers were all easy to use, even for the kids. It packs up to a small dufflebag and is nice and light. So far we've only used it for one trip. I hope it holds up!
