Born and raised in Northern Michigan, she grew up near glacial lakes and ski resorts. Courtney’s dad taught her to ski before the age of five, and she transitioned to snowboarding a few years later.
A quick learner with a competitive spirit, Courtney debuted on the competition stage at the age of 12 and went on to win numerous trophies as a competitive snowboarder. Her deep abiding love of the outdoors and extreme sports later transformed into a passion for surfing when she attended college in Charleston, South Carolina, just minutes from the Atlantic Ocean. Courtney quickly learned that few things make her happier than time in the sun and saltwater with friends.
Since graduating from the College of Charleston in South Carolina with a Bachelor of Arts in Media Studies, Courtney has amassed more than 10 years of experience creating engaging blog and website content based on her experiences as a world traveler, avid hiker, camper, surfer, and snowboarder.
After visiting Nicaragua on a month-long surf trip in 2018 Courtney moved south of the equator and never looked back! In addition to working as a freelance writer, since her move south, Courtney has also served as a surfing instructor with the world-famous, female surf camp Surf With Amigas in Costa Rica.
When she’s not traveling or surfing, Courtney can often be found exploring volcanoes or soothing sore muscles in the local hot springs. At other times, she gravitates back to the mountains of North Carolina, the clear lakes of Michigan, or another global destination still on her bucket list.
Courtney’s passion for surfing, traveling, and the outdoors drives her to try new things, explore the world, and help others to enjoy their own adventures more fully. She has traveled throughout Mexico, Central America, Southeast Asia, the Himalayas, and beyond in search of perfect waves, epic hikes, and rich cultural experiences. She truly loves the way travel has expanded her worldview and encouraged her to make room at the table for everyone.
Courtney also gives back to her local community by volunteering as a surf instructor providing free surf lessons to young Nicaraguan girls via Popoyo Sirenitas, an organization dedicated to empowering local girls through surfing, swimming, sexual education, and a variety of creative pursuits like music and arts.
Courtney holds a Bachelor of Arts in Media Studies from the College of Charleston.
